His hands were trembling.
I reached for it, but Ben’s grip held tight.
His hands were trembling.
Ben had fixed roofs during storms, and walked out in his sleepwear when he heard a noise between our houses. I had never seen him so shaken.
He looked at me.
“He made me promise to tell you where we really went.”
I thought he meant casinos, secret lunches, maybe some harmless rebellion Dad had hidden because I worried too much.
“I wasn’t only driving him.”
I almost smiled.
Then Ben said, “I wasn’t only driving him. The places mattered, but what we were doing there mattered more.”
The rain thickened.
I tucked the envelope under my coat and asked what he was talking about.
Ben stared at Dad’s grave.
Claire was Ben’s only daughter.
“Claire and I stopped speaking years ago,” he said. “When we did, we argued.”
