PART 2
“Her name is Vanessa Cole,” Tyler announced.
“And today, I want everyone to know that I love her.”
Mason’s fingers slipped from mine.
“Mom… who’s Vanessa?”
I couldn’t answer.
Tyler continued.
“For years, I was afraid to choose the life I actually wanted.”
Then he asked Vanessa to stand.
A blonde woman in first class rose while passengers applauded.
Tyler proposed over the speaker.
She said yes.
Mason quietly folded his BEST PILOT EVER drawing and pushed it into his backpack.
That hurt more than anything Tyler had said.
I didn’t confront him.
Instead, I texted my sister, an attorney.
By the time we landed, she had already told me exactly what to document.
Then my phone connected to airport Wi-Fi.
Thirty-seven emails downloaded.
One was from our bank.
Tyler had withdrawn $94,000 from our joint savings three days earlier.
Another showed a home-equity loan for $310,
000.
My supposed electronic signature appeared on it.
I had signed nothing.
Then I found the strangest email.
It came from Tyler’s airline benefits department.
DEPENDENT STATUS CHANGE CONFIRMED.
Mason had been removed from Tyler’s benefits six weeks earlier.
A different child had been added.
Elliot Cole.
Age five.
Vanessa’s son.
I stared at the screen.
Tyler hadn’t simply been having an affair.
He had been quietly replacing his family.
But the final attachment changed everything.
Elliot’s birth certificate listed his father as unknown.
Yet Tyler had submitted a private DNA report to the airline.
Probability of paternity: 99.99%.
The test was dated five years earlier.
Meaning Tyler had known about Elliot almost our entire marriage.
When the cockpit door finally opened, Tyler walked into the terminal holding Vanessa’s hand.
Then he saw Mason.
His face went completely white.
“Claire?”
Vanessa stopped beside him.
She looked at my son
and whispered,
“Oh my God.”
Not because she recognized me.
Because she recognized Mason.
She pulled an old photograph from her purse.
Two newborn boys lay side by side in a hospital bassinet.
One was labeled ELLIOT.
The other was labeled MASON.
Vanessa looked directly at Tyler.
