My Neighbor Drove My Father, Who Was Blind, to Every ‘Doctor’s Appointment’ for 8 Years – After Dad’s Funeral, He Said, ‘He Made Me Promise to Tell You Where We Really Went’

For eight years, I thought my father spent every Thursday going to doctor’s appointments, picking up groceries, and getting lunch with our neighbor Ben. After Dad died, Ben handed me an envelope and said, “He made me promise to tell you where we really went.”

Ten years ago, my father was diagnosed with glaucoma.

By the time doctors found it, the damage was already severe. Within two years, he could basically only see shadows.

Despite this, nobody could convince him to move out of his own home.

I lived nearly a thousand miles away.

“The house still smells like your mother’s recipes, and it even has the dent in the hallway where you crashed your bicycle trying to do tricks indoors,” he’d say.

“Leaving,” he said, “would feel like losing forty years with her all over again.”

I lived nearly a thousand miles away, with two kids, a demanding job, and a marriage to a woman just as driven as myself.
