Everyone waited.
I considered the question before answering.
“No.”
“Then what are you trying to accomplish?”
“The truth.”
No one spoke.
“For twenty-two years, I’ve allowed everyone, including Ethan, to believe a version of reality that simply isn’t true.”
Robert nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
“I won’t destroy anyone,” I said.
“I know.”
“But I also won’t continue financing people who publicly humiliate me.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“That is a very different objective.”
“It is.”
At exactly 9:42 a.m., Daniel drafted the first letter.
It was not dramatic.
No lawsuit. No threat.
Simply a formal notice stating that funding for the Naples property was temporarily suspended pending further written authorization by the grantor.
The grantor was me.
A second letter went to the title company. A third to the escrow officer. A fourth to the estate-planning bank.
Everything happened according to contracts everyone had signed years earlier.
