A homeless 24-year-old man used his last $12 L007

Part 1

A homeless twenty-four-year-old man used his last twelve dollars to buy yellow roses for my widowed mother’s eightieth birthday.

Months later, after she passed away, I learned she’d insisted he attend the reading of her will.

But when the lawyer presented him with a small wooden box, my brother sprang from his chair and yelled:

“Whatever you do, don’t open that!”

Mom was eighty when she invited a young homeless man into her home for dinner.

His name was Ethan.

At twenty-four, he owned nothing beyond what fit in his worn backpack and slept behind a shuttered bookstore.

They’d first encountered each other outside a pharmacy.

Mom had dropped her groceries, scattering them across the sidewalk.

People walked past without stopping.

But Ethan knelt down and helped pick everything up.

After that, he began visiting every Thursday.

He carried her shopping.

Fixed the broken porch stairs.

Changed lightbulbs she could no longer reach safely.
