The House June Bought – 1

“Doctor.” I pulled down my collar. “This is what she left.”

Dr. Lee set down his pen and leaned in. His eyes waited on the red mark for two seconds, then went back to his notebook. “Based on the skin, I can’t tell how recent it is.”

“You can’t tell?” I stared at him. “I was burned Tuesday night. Today is Sunday. Five days. You can’t tell?”

“Redness can come from a lot of things.” His voice was flat, like he was reading from a form. “Any trouble sleeping? Headaches? Sudden spells of agitation?”

“I’m about to get agitated right now.” I said. “People are telling me I’m crazy. You think I shouldn’t be?”

June sighed from the side of the room. “See? This is what I’m talking about. Bring up the child and she gets worked up.”

“I’m not sick.” I held Dr. Lee’s eyes. “I need my daughter brought down those stairs.”
