Dr. Lee didn’t look at me. He looked at June. “Mrs. Vance, could you get me a glass of water?”
June went into the kitchen.
Dr. Lee turned back to me and lowered his voice. “Mrs. Vance, I heard what you said. My job isn’t to decide who’s crazy and who isn’t. If you refuse this evaluation, I’ll write down: ‘Subject refused to cooperate.’ Nobody can force a diagnosis on you.”
“My daughter is upstairs.”
“That’s a different problem. Not my territory. But I’ve noted it.”
The door opened. Derek came up from downstairs, stopped in the entryway, and saw the doctor was still there. He hesitated. “Mom sent me up to get you. Said the doctor was done.”
I stood up and looked him in the eye. “Did you hear that? I wasn’t diagnosed as crazy. I just refused to cooperate.”
Derek looked away. “Mom says the doctor says you need rest.”
