“You don’t want Sophie thinking her mom is too scared to see a doctor, do you?” June’s smile didn’t move. “Ten minutes. Say your piece. She’s right upstairs waiting.”
“Mommy!”
Sophie came running down the stairs in her little pajamas. I reached for her. June cut in front of me, scooped her up, kissed her. “Grandma needs a word with the doctor, and then Mommy will come up. Go wait upstairs now, sweet girl.”
Sophie looked at June, then at me. June set her back on the step, and she went up without a fuss.
I walked into the living room and sat on the couch. Back straight.
“Ask away.”
“Have you felt lately like someone’s trying to hurt you?” Dr. Lee asked.
I pointed at June. “Yes. Night before last, she pried my mouth open and poured scalding chili water down my throat.”
June sighed, all sympathy. “She ran a fever for two days. She’s getting things mixed up.”
