Lucas saw it, too.
“Dad said he was working,” he whispered.
I couldn’t answer.
The crowd began chanting for the couple to acknowledge the camera. Cindy leaned toward Derek, smiling. He gave an awkward laugh and moved closer to her.
Lucas stood up.
He looked at the sign in his hands, then turned it over.
He reached into my purse, pulled out the black marker, and began writing.
I saw the first word.
DAD.
Then he added the rest.
DAD, WHY DID YOU BELIEVE HER?
He lifted the sign above his head.
The camera was still focused on Derek and Cindy. As it shifted upward, Lucas’s message appeared on the giant screen.
For a moment, our section went quiet.
A woman nearby lowered her phone. Someone murmured in surprise.
Then the camera moved away.
But the message had already been seen.
Derek turned around. His eyes found Lucas, then me.
