For a little while, he was simply a boy enjoying a basketball game with his mother.
At halftime, music began playing, and the Kiss Cam appeared on the giant screen. Couples waved, laughed, and occasionally leaned toward one another as the camera moved through the crowd.
Lucas rolled his eyes.
“Gross.”
I laughed.
Then he grabbed my wrist.
“Mom…”
I followed his gaze toward the screen.
Two rows below us sat a woman with long hair and a bright red jacket.
Cindy.
Beside her was my husband.
Derek.
My stomach tightened. I looked again, hoping I had somehow mistaken him for someone else.
But it was definitely Derek.He glanced up at the screen, then looked around the arena. His expression changed when he realized the camera had focused on him and Cindy.
He reached for his wedding ring.
And took it off.
I watched him slip it into his jacket pocket.
