“Lucas!” he called. “Put that down. We need to talk.”
I helped my son step down from his seat.
His hands were shaking.
“Mom,” he whispered, “Tyler told me.”
I took his hand.
“We’re leaving.”
He nodded, and we headed toward the concourse.
I didn’t care who had seen the screen. I cared that my son had just watched his father do something that made him question whether he could trust him.
And I knew we needed answers.
The Explanation That Made Everything Worse
We stopped in a quiet hallway outside the main seating area.
I crouched in front of Lucas.
“Are you okay?”
He shook his head.
“Did Dad lie?”
“Yes,” I answered. “He lied about where he was tonight.”Lucas swallowed.
“About Tyler, too?”
That was the question I couldn’t answer.
A minute later, Derek appeared. Cindy followed several steps behind him.
“Kylie, wait,” he said. “It’s not what it looks like.”
