I couldn’t wait any longer.
I called my father.
“Dad, come to the hospital immediately.”
He was silent.
Then he asked:
“Are the test results ready?”
I froze.
“How do you know we’re waiting for test results?”
My father let out a heavy sigh.
“Sarah, I’m coming.”
Twenty minutes later, he arrived at the hospital.
I had never seen him look so old.
His hair was messy, one of his shirt buttons was fastened incorrectly, and his hands were trembling.
“Where’s Linda?”
“Mom is okay. But first, you’re going to explain why you’ve been giving her your medication.”
My father sat down.
For a long time, he didn’t say anything.
Then he lowered his head.
“Because I did something incredibly foolish, sweetheart.”
It was the first time I’d ever heard my father speak about himself that way.
“What have you been hiding from us?”
