His eyes filled with tears.
“Three months ago, your mother started forgetting things. One day, she couldn’t remember where she’d put her keys. Then another day, she got confused on her way home from the store.”
I listened in horror.
“She told me she was afraid she was losing her memory. Do you remember what happened to your grandmother during the last years of her life?”
I nodded.
My mother’s mother had passed away years earlier after a long struggle with memory loss.
“Linda was terrified that the same thing was happening to her,” my father continued. “And I was terrified, too.”
“But the pills?”
My father wiped his eyes.
“I thought some of my medication might help her. A doctor had prescribed it to me for a completely different condition. I didn’t understand how it worked. I just convinced myself it would help.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
