Three months later, I invited my parents to a restaurant to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary.
I took a photograph of them.
My father had his arm around my mother, and she was smiling in a way I hadn’t seen in a long time.
Suddenly, my father took her hand and said:
“Linda, I used to think love meant making every decision yourself so the person you loved wouldn’t have to be afraid. But now I understand that real love means listening, even when you’re frightened yourself.”
My mother smiled.
“Robert, I don’t need a perfect husband. I need someone who’s willing to admit when he’s wrong and make sure he doesn’t repeat the same mistake.”
I watched them for a long time that evening.
And I thought about how differently everything could have ended if my mother hadn’t found the courage to call me.
