My father covered his face with his hands.
He was crying.
So hard that I began crying, too.
“I thought I was losing her,” he whispered. “Every time she forgot something, I remembered what happened to her mother. I couldn’t bear the thought that one day Linda might not recognize me anymore.”
The doctor answered calmly.
“Your fear is understandable, Robert. But giving someone medication that hasn’t been prescribed to them is dangerous. It’s essential that this never happens again.”
My father nodded.
“I promise.”
At that moment, the hospital room door opened.
My mother came in with a nurse.
She saw my father’s tears.
“Robert, what’s wrong?”
He immediately stood up.
Walked toward her.
And took both her hands.
“Linda, forgive me.”
My mother looked confused.
“For what?”
“For frightening you. For not listening to you. For thinking I could protect you all by myself.”
