But Thomas wasn’t finished.
It turned out the woman who ran the center’s art program had seen Daniel’s drawings and had been impressed by his creativity.
She wanted to invite him to join their classes.
The organization could also help him develop his artistic skills and eventually offer some of his paintings for sale.
“He has a wonderful sense of color,” Thomas explained. “And we want to give him a chance to develop that talent.”
Two months later, Daniel participated in his very first small art exhibition.
Several of his paintings sold.
And with the money he earned, he bought me a little white coffee mug.
He handed it to me with the proudest expression I’d ever seen.
“Mom, now you can rest. I’m working too.”
I hugged him and, for the first time in a very long while, laughed through my tears.
Today, Daniel continues attending the art center.
