There were two people in the center.
A mother and son standing inside a large red heart.
And surrounding them were hundreds of tiny, brightly colored hearts.
At the bottom, in uneven handwriting, Daniel had written:
“My mom gets tired every day because she loves me. When I make lots of money, Mom won’t have to work anymore. I’ll buy her a big house where she can always smile.”
I covered my mouth with both hands.
That day, Daniel had only been trying to make me happy.
And I had screamed at him to leave.
Thomas continued.
“Your son told us he wants to become an artist and earn money so you won’t have to work so hard anymore.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that why you painted this, sweetheart?”
He nodded.
“Mom, I didn’t want you to be tired of me.”
I couldn’t hold back my tears.
