I stared at that sentence. Nick had told her I agreed. I took a screenshot and sent it to Elaine.
Downstairs, Nick laughed at something on television. I was upstairs trying to work out what I could wear to the hospital, and he sounded as though the evening had gone back to normal.
Nora moved under my hand. I told her it was okay, though I was not sure I believed it.
The next morning, I woke to a car pulling into the driveway. Elaine arrived carrying three large shopping bags. I assumed they contained replacement clothes until I saw her expression.
Nick met her downstairs. “Mom? What are you doing here?”
She placed the bags on the kitchen table. “Nicholas, we need to talk.”
I came down. Nick stood beside the counter where he had made his sandwich the day before. His eyes went straight to the bags.
“Mom, you don’t need to get involved in this.”
