“She wasn’t there.”
He looked at Ethan.
“She’s undergoing treatment. I need to know where she is.”
Mr. Harrison explained that Lily had general after-school permission on file. The drama teacher and school nurse had checked that stage crew was within her current limitations.
“She’s undergoing treatment.”
But the change had never been confirmed with Jacob.
“That was a failure on our side,” Mr. Harrison admitted. “Ethan shouldn’t have helped keep it secret, but the adults were responsible for making sure Lily’s schedule was communicated properly.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Ethan shouldn’t have helped keep it secret.”
“She thought he’d say no,” Ethan whispered.
Jacob frowned.
“I told Lily I didn’t want her exhausting herself with rehearsals.”
“She’s not acting,” Ethan said. “She’s helping with costumes.”
“That’s not the point.”
“She thought he’d say no.”
“I know.”
“Then why encourage her?”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“She wanted to use her mom’s sewing machine.”
