My smile disappeared.
“Please,” Jacob told him. “Tell her the truth yourself right now, or I’ll have to.”
“Ethan?” I gasped.
He swallowed.
“I helped Lily join stage crew, Mom.”
“The school play?”
“Tell her the truth yourself right now, or I’ll have to.”
He nodded.
“And I helped her find something that belonged to her mom. She didn’t want her dad to know until she’d learned how to use it.”
Mr. Harrison stepped forward.
“There’s more to it.”
“She didn’t want her dad to know.”
Jacob leaned toward me.
“My daughter was supposed to attend art club after school. Instead, she’s been working backstage for three weeks.”
I stared at Ethan.
“Without Jacob knowing?”
He nodded again.
“Ethan!”
I stared at Ethan.
“I know, Mom.”
Jacob rubbed his forehead.
“Yesterday, I went to pick Lily up from art club before an appointment. She wasn’t there. Nobody at the art room knew where she’d gone. I spent twenty minutes trying to find her before someone told me she was backstage.”
