His Mother Was Called to the School

Sometimes I wondered whether they disliked Ethan.

Lily’s mother had died when she was young.

The next morning, my phone rang.

“Meryl? This is Mr. Harrison from Ethan’s school.”

My heart raced.

“Is Ethan okay?”

“He’s safe.”

That wasn’t reassuring enough.

My heart raced.

“What happened?”

“I need you to come immediately. Lily’s father is here, and he’s demanding to speak with you.”

“Is Lily all right?”

“She’s safe too. There’s no medical emergency.”

Ten minutes later, I walked into his office.

“Is Lily all right?”

Ethan sat beside Jacob, repeatedly folding the corner of a permission sheet.

Jacob looked exhausted.

“Is this about the wig?” I asked.

He stared at Ethan.

“You really didn’t tell her?”

“Is this about the wig?”

My smile disappeared.

“Tell me what?”

Jacob turned toward me.

“You have no idea what your son did, do you?”

I looked at Ethan.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
