His Mother Was Called to the School

Jacob stopped moving.

“What?”

“The one in the auditorium.”

“She wanted to use her mom’s sewing machine.”

Jacob stared at him.

“What sewing machine?”

“The one you donated.”

Jacob looked genuinely confused.

Mr. Harrison arranged for us to speak with Lily and the drama teacher.

The auditorium smelled of paint and dusty curtains.

Fabric scraps covered a worktable.

Beside a basket of thread sat an old sewing machine.

Jacob stopped in the doorway.

“That still works?”

Jacob stopped in the doorway.

Ms. Bennett, the drama teacher, nodded.

“We had it serviced last year.”

Lily was sitting nearby.

She wore a knitted cap. The wig Ethan had given her rested on a stand.

“Dad?”

“We had it serviced last year.”

Jacob approached the machine.

Ms. Bennett explained that Jacob had donated it with other sewing supplies several years earlier.

When Lily mentioned that her mother used to make costumes, Ethan asked whether the school still had anything belonging to her.
