Chapter 1: The night before my wedding, I overheard my bridesmaids through the hotel wall: h6368

That was all.

“Did you see the original messages?”

“No. Just screenshots.”

“Did you believe them?”

Kendra’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to believe they were fake. But Vanessa said she was protecting Ethan. She told us you were manipulating him and that he deserved to know the truth.”

I stood and walked to the window.

Vanessa had prepared two versions of the same story. To Ethan, she portrayed me as a woman who doubted the marriage. To the bridesmaids, she portrayed me as a woman who was cheating on him.

If the wedding collapsed, she could claim she had tried to protect him.

If the wedding went ahead, she could create a scene that made me look guilty.

Either way, she intended to control the narrative.

“Do you still have the screenshots?” I asked.

Kendra nodded and pulled out her phone.

She showed me three images. The first was a message from Daniel asking whether I had finished a work assignment. The second was my reply. The third showed him saying he hoped I had a wonderful wedding.
