Kendra twisted her fingers together.
“I knew Vanessa had feelings for Ethan. I knew she was planning to make things difficult for you. But I thought she was just trying to get attention.”
“You heard her talk about ruining my dress.”
“Yes.”
“You heard her talk about the rings.”
Kendra nodded.
“Why didn’t you stop her?”
“Because she said it was a joke. And because she told me she had proof Ethan wasn’t happy with you.”
“What proof?”
Kendra looked at Chloe, then back at me.
“She said you had been seeing someone else.”
The room fell silent.
“What?”
“She showed us screenshots. Messages from a man named Daniel. She said you had been meeting him secretly and that Ethan was the only person who didn’t know.”
I felt as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath me.
Daniel was my former coworker. We had exchanged occasional messages about a professional certification course, and he had congratulated me when I got engaged.
