“I understand that you were scared, Robert.”
He looked at me hopefully.
“So you understand?”
I looked into the eyes of the man I had loved for most of my life.
“Yes. But do you know what hurt me the most?”
He shook his head.
“If the results had been confirmed, I wouldn’t have left you alone. I would have accompanied you to every doctor’s appointment, held your hand, and helped you face whatever lay ahead of us.”
My voice trembled.
“But you didn’t even give me three days to prove my innocence. You decided I had cheated on you before you knew the truth.”
Robert lowered his eyes.
“Margaret…”
“You called our daughter and told her I had cheated on you. You threatened divorce. You made me feel like a criminal in my own home. And you did all of that over a result that hadn’t even been confirmed.”
