I felt an enormous sense of relief, too.
Despite everything that had happened, I had worried about his health throughout those three days. I had never wished him any harm, and I genuinely wanted him to be all right.
But the relief soon gave way to pain.
Because it was now clear that, in just three days, Robert had managed to accuse me, humiliate me, and threaten to end our marriage without even waiting for the final results.
He turned toward me. Tears streamed down his cheeks.
“Margaret… darling… please forgive me.”
He reached out, trying to take my hand.
But I gently pulled away.
Sensing the awkwardness of the moment, the doctor suggested that we speak privately.
Robert looked at me.
“Please forgive me. I was frightened. I couldn’t think clearly. It felt as though my entire life was falling apart right in front of my eyes.”
I slowly nodded.
