The doctor opened Robert’s medical file and looked carefully at both of us.
“Mr. Wilson, I’ve reviewed the results of the additional tests. We can now discuss the final findings.”
My husband leaned forward.
“Well? Was the result confirmed?”
The doctor answered calmly:
“No. The initial screening test produced a reactive result, but the subsequent confirmatory tests showed no signs of infection. Based on the diagnostic evaluation, the infection has not been confirmed.”
Robert blinked several times, as though he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
“Are you saying I don’t have this infection?”
“Exactly. The first result was a false positive. If necessary, we can discuss any additional follow-up testing, but the current results do not confirm an infection.”
For several seconds, complete silence filled the doctor’s office.
Then Robert covered his face with both hands.
And he burst into tears.
“Thank God…” he kept whispering.
