He began to cry again.
“I know. I made a terrible mistake. I have no right to ask you to forget it, but I want to make things right.”
I opened my handbag and took out my wedding ring.
Carefully, I placed it on the table between us.
Robert’s face suddenly went pale.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m going to stay with Susan for a while.”
“You’re leaving me?”
“I need time, Robert. I don’t know how I’m supposed to forget what you said to me. I can’t simply go home now and pretend nothing happened.”
He reached across the table toward me.
“Please, don’t give up on us. We’ve been together for 35 years. Do you really want to end everything because of one mistake I made?”
I looked at him.
“This isn’t just about your mistake. It’s about how you treated me. All my life, I believed we would support each other through difficult times. But when you became frightened, the first thing you did was accuse me.”
