We went back to Lakeview Foods the next Saturday.
And the one after that.
And every Saturday since.
Zoe insists.
She says we have to shop on Saturdays. At Lakeview. At two-thirty. Because that’s when Henry stocks the juice aisle.
She brings him something every week. A drawing. A Twins baseball card. A rock she found on the beach at Brighton. Once, a whole box of Lucky Charms she paid for with her own allowance.
He keeps all of them in his locker in the break room. Terrence told me.
Henry’s mom found me in the parking lot the second Saturday.
Her name is Rosa. She’s a nurse at Essentia Health. She’d heard about Zoe from Henry. She’d heard about me.
She hugged me in the parking lot. For a long time.
“He came home that night,” she said, “and he told me a little girl told the police he didn’t do it. He kept saying it over and over. Zoe said I didn’t do it. Zoe said I was being careful.”
