A Rude Customer Screamed at a Young Employee With Down Syndrome, but She Soon Regretted Asking for the Manager

I looked at him.

“When the lady was yelling,” Henry said. “You said, There’s no need to speak to him like that. I heard you.”

He pointed at me.

“You didn’t pretend you didn’t know me,” he said. “And you didn’t even know me.”

I couldn’t speak.

“I think Annie would say it’s okay,” Henry said. “I think she’d say, You were thirteen.”

He thought about it.

“I’m nineteen,” he said. “And I still don’t know what to say when people yell at me. So thirteen is really young.”

I put my hand over my mouth.

Zoe came over and put her arms around my waist.

Henry stood there. In his green polo shirt. With purple juice on his khakis.

He looked a little embarrassed.

“Did I say something wrong?” he asked.

“No,” I said. “No, Henry. You said exactly the right thing.”
