A Rude Customer Screamed at a Young Employee With Down Syndrome, but She Soon Regretted Asking for the Manager

Henry stared at her.

“You saw that?”

“I saw that,” Zoe said. “You were being really careful.”

Henry’s face crumpled.

He started crying again.

But it was different now.

“Nobody ever believes me,” he said. “When something happens. When something breaks. Everybody always thinks it’s me.”

He wiped his eyes under his glasses.

“Even when it’s not me,” he said. “Even when I’m being careful. They just look at me. And they think it’s me.”

Zoe didn’t say anything.

She just held out the Lucky Charms.

“You can have these,” she said. “If you want.”

Henry looked at the box.

“I’m not supposed to take stuff from customers,” he said.

“I’ll pay for them,” Zoe said. “Then they’re mine. And then I’m giving them to you.”

Henry thought about that.

“That’s allowed,” he said slowly.

“That’s allowed,” Zoe said.
