A Rude Customer Screamed at a Young Employee With Down Syndrome, but She Soon Regretted Asking for the Manager

“Mom,” she whispered. “Are you going to tell him? What I saw?”

“Yes.”

“Will he believe me? I’m just a kid.”

I stopped.

I knelt down. Right there by the bakery. In front of the bagels.

I looked my daughter in the eyes.

“Zoe,” I said. “Tell me again. Exactly what you saw. Every single thing. Don’t leave anything out.”

She took a breath.

“We were in the cereal aisle,” she said. “And I went to look at the end cap. For the Lucky Charms. The big boxes are on the end. And there’s a gap. Between the end cap and the shelf. Where you can see into the next aisle.”

“Okay.”

“And I saw the lady,” Zoe said. “The one in the white vest. She was standing by the juice. And the boy—Henry—he was on a ladder. A little step ladder. Putting juice on the top shelf. With his back to her.”
