I smiled.
I wanted to arrive happy.
I wanted to walk through the airport and hold my granddaughter without limping because I had spent six hours folded against an airplane wall.
So I looked at Josh.
“Josh.”
He removed his headphones.
“I’m asking you one more time. Please stay on your side.”
He laughed.
“Lady, we’ve already been through this.”
“And nothing has changed.”
“I’m tall.”
“I noticed.”
“What do you expect me to do?”
“Move your knee.”
He rolled his eyes.
Then turned away.
I pressed the call button.
The light came on.
Josh looked at it.
For one weak second, my finger hovered near the button.
I almost canceled the request.
I didn’t.
Before the attendant reached us, Josh pulled his leg back.
“Happy now?”
When she arrived, courage failed me again.
“Could I have some water?”
“Of course.”
I drank half the cup feeling ridiculous.
