“Are you sure you’re okay? What about your heart?”
“The operation went fine, Mom. Please, I just want to sleep.”
She shut her eyes before adding, “Can you go downstairs and pay for the balance? They said everything needs to be settled today.”
I had more questions but didn’t want to distress her.
Before paying, I went downstairs and requested a meeting with her surgeon.
He smiled upon learning I was Emily’s mother.
“Oh, you’re Emily’s mother! I’m glad you’re here. And I must say, it was very brave of your family to agree to this.”
Confused, I frowned.
“Agree to what, Doctor?”
His expression changed.
“I thought Emily had discussed the procedure with you.”
“She did. She told me she needed emergency heart surgery.”
He paused.
“I think you should speak with your daughter before we discuss anything further.”
“Doctor, is something wrong with her heart?”
