The Secret of the Convent

Fonseca looked at the key in his hand.

—What is it for?

María Inés responded:

—To open it.

—And why would I want to do it?

The nun approached.

—Because if you don’t open it you…

Another blow.

The crack grew larger.

—…something will open it from the other side.

Then María Inés took Fonseca’s hand.

His skin was cold.

—You have ten minutes.

—For what?

She looked at Camilo.

Then to the superior.

And finally to Fonseca.

—To decide which of us should die.

The door shook again.

And this time…

something hit from the other side with a human hand.

A hand that left five deep marks on the stone.

María Inés whispered:

—And remember, doctor…

—That?

—The person you think is your partner…

He looked at Camilo.

—…died three days ago.

Fonseca remained motionless.

He slowly looked at Camilo.

The young man smiled.

But he didn’t seem scared anymore.

He seemed to be waiting.

—Doctor —Camilo said—, I think we should open the door.

And for the first time that night…

Fonseca understood that perhaps he had never come to investigate a death.

He had been taken there to open something.

Something I had been waiting for for more than a century.
