The Secret of the Convent

They were all looking towards him.

The superior whispered:

—Now that you know the secret, doctor, you can’t leave.

Fonseca slowly took out his phone.

—What secret?

—The one that the Church tried to bury for more than a century.

—What’s behind the door?

The superior looked towards the back of the room.

There was another door there.

Bigger.

Older.

And completely covered in symbols.

—There is nothing behind that door.

Fonseca frowned.

—So why do they protect her?

The superior responded:

—Because there is something ahead.

A deep noise shook the ground.

The women in the beds began to pray.

All at the same time.

Camilo looked towards the door.

—Doctor…

Something was breathing on the other side.

A huge breath.

Slow.

Heavy.

Fonseca then understood the true meaning of the message.

“NOW YOU KNOW WHERE THE DOOR IS.”

He was not talking about the door of the convent.

I was talking about that one.

The door that had remained closed for more than a hundred years.

The superior raised a small cross.

—When María Inés disappeared for the first time, she promised to return.

—And he came back?

—Yeah.

—Where is it now?

The superior looked at him directly.

—Behind you.

Fonseca turned around.

María Inés was there.

But she no longer looked like a young nun.

His face changed.

At times he was young.

Then old man.

Then he was young again.

His skin seemed to move like water.

And his eyes were completely black.

Camilo fell to the ground.

María Inés smiled.

—Doctor Fonseca…

His voice was exactly the same one he had heard on the phone.

—I told him not to perform the autopsy.

Fonseca backed away.

—What are you?

She bowed her head.

—I am not what is behind the door.

He looked towards the huge stone door.

—I am what keeps the door closed.

A knock shook the entire room.

BOOM.

The nuns screamed.

A crack appeared in the door.

María Inés lost her smile.

—And you guys just made me run out of time.
