Nineteen Thousand Dollars, a Forged Signature, and a Flight to the Dominican Republic

“Look at the H,” I said.Marcus leaned over the table.

He clicked his pen again and pointed the tip at the paper.

“I loop the top of my H,” I said.

“I’ve done it that way since middle school.

Every form in my personnel file on base has that exact loop.

This H is just two straight vertical lines.”

“I need a known sample of your handwriting,” Marcus said.

“Something you signed before today.”“Wait here,” I said.

I walked down the hall to Lily’s bedroom.

Her little bed was perfectly made.

I opened the top drawer of her dresser and took out a stack of preschool enrollment forms I had signed in August.

I brought the top page back to the living room and set it beside the custody document.

Marcus leaned down to compare the two blue ink signatures side by side.

He studied the looped H on the school form and the stiff, straight lines on the legal transfer.“They didn’t even try to trace it,” Marcus said.
