Nineteen Thousand Dollars, a Forged Signature, and a Flight to the Dominican Republic

I didn’t close the lid.

We moved into the living room.

The evening sun threw long shadows across the carpet where the paramedics had treated Lily hours before.

The sour smell of old milk still clung to the sofa.

Marcus pulled a clear plastic bag from the cargo pocket of his uniform and laid it flat on the glass coffee table.

“Show me exactly what you found,” Marcus said.“Point to it, but don’t touch the paper anywhere a signature might be.”

I lifted the custody document by its very top corners and set it on the glass.

I turned straight to the last page.

A notary stamp from a county in Maryland sat beside a signature line.

My name was signed in blue ink.

The date next to it was four days ago.

Four days ago I had still been on a transport plane flying out of Germany.
