You simply live inside it.
“What happened to my baby?”
been almost two.
Tyler had known for more than five years.
Five years of birthday candles.
Christmas mornings.
Family vacations.
School pictures.
Five years of telling Mason stories about the day he was born.
Five years of letting me believe that I had given birth to him.
Five years of knowing another woman thought her child was dead.
“You knew,” I whispered.
“I was afraid.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I thought if I told you, I would destroy everybody.”
“You chose to let us live inside a lie.”
“I loved Mason.”
“Then why did you remove him from your benefits?”
Tyler froze.
Vanessa turned toward him.
I pulled out my phone.
“The airline benefits email.”
He said nothing.
“Elliot added. Mason removed.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“You told me you were finally getting Elliot covered because we were getting married.”
