My parents threw me out at nineteen because I wouldn’t end my pregnancy. Ten years later I drove back with my son and knocked on the same door and I finally told them who his father was.

He had learned it off me. At ten.

That is when I booked the time off work.

So we packed one bag and drove eight hours back to Ohio.

They had no idea we were coming.

Late that Saturday afternoon I stood on the same porch I had been put out of ten years earlier, with my son on the step behind me, and I knocked.

The door opened.

My father looked at me like he was looking at something that was not there.

He said my name. Halle.

My mother came up behind him. And then her eyes went past me to Leo.

Nobody said anything. Ten years standing in a doorway in the amount of time it takes to breathe out.

And then I said: I need to tell you the truth.

My father’s face went tight.

I said: about Leo.

My mother’s hand went over her mouth.
