He made no attempt to follow the bus.
He didn’t approach to offer assistance.
Instead, he turned around and returned toward the silver pickup.
Mrs. Shaw paused the video.
The entire room remained silent.
I sat motionless, both hands resting firmly against my knees.
“Would you replay that final section?” I asked.
She started it again.
I watched Frank notice the stranger. I watched the individual walk closer. I watched myself standing between them, unaware of his presence. Then I watched the folding doors close.
This time, everything made sense.
Frank hadn’t looked at me and decided to keep my daughter away.
He had looked beyond me and recognized that the same person he’d previously refused was now standing close enough to approach her.
I touched my fingertips gently against my lips.
“Oh, my goodness.”
Deputy Reed allowed me a quiet moment.
Then he explained, “Mr. Lawson had already reported the earlier encounter. When that individual appeared again, he followed instructions to keep Ellie aboard and return her to school.”
