My Neighbor Drove My Father, Who Was Blind, to Every ‘Doctor’s Appointment’ for 8 Years – After Dad’s Funeral, He Said, ‘He Made Me Promise to Tell You Where We Really Went’

His letter was short, typed except for his signature.

My boy,

Ben gave me freedom every Thursday without ever making me feel helpless.

Helping Ben was my way of returning that dignity in full.

He described curbs, doors, food, and faces, just so I could know what was going on. He drove me to appointments. He waited while I answered the doctors’ questions myself. He offered help without making me feel small.

Helping Ben was my way of returning that dignity in full. And in a way, he was helping you, too.

You may think I was hiding something. I was.

I told Ben I would go with him.

I was hiding how useful I still felt.

I read the line twice.

I read it a third time, and realized how much Ben had contributed to my dad’s life. With a sigh, I looked at Ben.

“Okay. For my dad’s sake, and for all the love you poured into my family, I’ll help. But I won’t be your stand-in. I’ll just be there like you were there for Dad.”
