When it ended, he didn’t cry.
He didn’t yell.
He just stood completely still, staring at the screen.
“How long?” he finally asked.
“I don’t know,” I said.
“But Daniel — that message said same place.
This wasn’t the first time.”
He closed his eyes.
His jaw tightened.
Then his phone rang.
It was Jenna.
He looked at me.
I nodded.
He answered on speaker.
“Hey babe,” she said, her voice warm and easy.
“You almost home?
I made dinner.”
Daniel said nothing for three seconds.
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
“Almost.”
He hung up.
Then he sat down on the ground right there, beside my father’s grave, and put his head in his hands.
I sat next to him.
We stayed like that for a long time.
Then he looked up.
“Mom,” he said.
“She’s pregnant.”
The world stopped.
