I should have pushed harder.
Instead, I accepted the money because I knew my daughter was determined. I used some of it to pay bills, repaired the house, and eventually put much of it into savings.
But the money never answered the biggest question:
Why wouldn’t my daughter come home?
Twelve Years of Silence
When she first left, I was devastated.
She had always been my little girl. Watching her pack her belongings and leave with a man I barely knew felt like losing her overnight.
Her husband was Korean, several years older than her, and extremely private.
I tried to get to know him, but he never said much around me.
After the wedding, they moved away.
I expected regular visits.
Instead, the years passed.
Birthdays came and went.
Thanksgivings came and went.
Christmas after Christmas, I set an extra place at the table anyway.
I told myself that someday my daughter would walk through the front door and everything would feel normal again.
