“My 18-Year-Old Son Became an Organ Donor Overnight — Here’s the Phone Call That Changed Everything”

“He was eighteen,” David said. “
I kept thinking there had to be another way.”

“Then why didn’t you come?”

“Because I was afraid I would tell him not to do it.”

“And?”

“I almost did.”

David looked at Clara.

“But Ethan told me something.”

“What?”

“He said, ‘Dad, if Clara dies because I’m too afraid to help her, I’ll never forgive myself.’”

Clara began crying.

David continued.

“So I left.”

“You abandoned him.”

“Yes.”

His voice was barely audible.

“I thought if I wasn’t there, I couldn’t influence his decision.”

I didn’t forgive him.

Not that day.

Maybe not even now.

But for the first time, I understood why he had disappeared.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because he had been overwhelmed by guilt.

Then Clara asked the question that mattered most.

“Did you know Ethan might die?”

David shook his head.

“No.”
