Chapter 1: The Phantom at the Banquet
My name is Alice Jordan. I am thirty-one years old, and exactly nine weeks ago, I lay on a sterilized operating table, allowed a surgeon to carve a six-inch chasm into my abdomen, and gave my father my left kidney. I saved his life.
Yet, if you were sitting in the opulent, chandelier-lit dining room of my parents’ estate on the evening of November 23rd, you would assume I was merely the hired help.
It was my father’s recovery dinner. Twenty-two relatives, swathed in cashmere and clinking crystal flutes of vintage champagne, were gathered around a sprawling mahogany table. The air was thick with the scent of roasted duck and the intoxicating perfume of old money. I sat at chair number eighteen, wedged between a deaf great-aunt and a floral centerpiece that entirely obscured my view of the head of the table. Beneath my emerald silk dress, the fresh surgical scar was a line of searing fire, a phantom limb of pain that throbbed with every heartbeat.
