Ten minutes later, I heard the front door close.
I assumed he’d gone into the yard.
But when I came out of my bedroom an hour later, Daniel was gone.
His favorite blue jacket was missing.
So was the colorful painting he’d been trying to show me.
At first, I searched the nearby park.
Then the grocery store.
Then I called our neighbors.
By eleven that night, I was at the police station.
“Can your son find his way home on his own?” an officer asked.
Through my tears, I answered,
“Usually, yes. But when he’s frightened or upset, he can become confused.”
The police immediately began searching.
The following day, his photograph was shared across the city.
On the third day, volunteers joined the search.
On the fourth day, someone found his blue jacket at a bus stop.
I collapsed to my knees right there on the sidewalk.
