There was water spilled across the kitchen floor. Paints and papers covered the table.
Daniel had been painting again.
He hurried toward me with a huge smile.
“Mom! Look! I made this for you!”
But I’d already reached my breaking point.
“Daniel! How many times have I told you to clean up your paints?”
He looked confused.
“But, Mom, I wanted to make you happy.”
“Do you ever think about what I want?”
His smile disappeared.
“Mom, are you angry?”
And then I said the words that became the biggest mistake of my life.
“YES, I’M ANGRY! I’M EXHAUSTED! I’M TIRED OF YOU, DANIEL! JUST GO AWAY! GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!”
He stood completely still for several seconds.
Then he asked quietly,
“Mom… you don’t want me to live here anymore?”
I didn’t answer.
I simply walked into my bedroom and shut the door.
