My hands stopped shaking.
For the first time in years, I felt something stronger than fear.
Control.
Then David’s name appeared on my phone.
I answered.
“Eleanor, there’s a problem with my card.”
I looked toward the airport entrance.
“Really?”
“My airport lounge payment was declined.”
“That sounds inconvenient.”
His voice changed.
“Did you do something?”
Before I could respond, I heard a woman laughing nearby.
Then her voice floated clearly through the phone.
“David, darling, forget the lounge and come back to the suite.”
My heart seemed to stop.
David covered the receiver too late.
And the woman added six words that destroyed the last illusion of my marriage.
“She still thinks you’re traveling alone?”
