Then I noticed something else.
The purchase had been authorized that morning.
The transaction had reached my phone only after his departure.
My stomach tightened.
David hadn’t purchased jewelry for our anniversary.
Our anniversary was seven months away.
And he certainly hadn’t bought anything for his mother.
Teresa considered diamonds an irresponsible extravagance unless someone else was paying.
I pulled into the airport parking area and called our private banking representative.
“This is Eleanor Hayes, the primary account holder.”
The representative verified my identity.
“How may I assist you?”
“I need to suspend every additional card issued under my account.”
“Are you referring to all six premium cards?”
“Yes.”
I watched an airplane rise above the terminal.
“Every single one.”
The representative explained that the transactions would be reviewed separately and that suspending the cards wouldn’t automatically reverse completed purchases.
I understood.
“Please proceed.”
One by one, she confirmed that the cards had been disabled.
